Burn Care

Learn More About Burn Care

The Burn Care team at Children’s Hospital New Orleans is a multidisciplinary team specializing in the evaluation and treatment of pediatric burn injuries. Members of the Burn Care team include a specially trained trauma and burn surgeon, and other physicians and physician extenders, including rehabilitative medicine providers. In addition, members from the physical and occupational therapy, social services, nutrition, pharmacy, speech pathology, psychosocial therapy, chaplain services, and child life departments are involved in the care of these patients.

The Burn Care team collaboratively assesses the child’s needs, then recommends and provides innovative care based on a patient-centered team approach. As New Orleans’ only dedicated pediatric burn service led by a fellowship-trained burn surgeon, care is provided for the entire spectrum of burn injuries and similar skin disorders from infancy to adulthood. Treatment includes burn resuscitation, the use of dermal substitutes, and autologous skin cell suspension (ASCS). In the community, the Burn Care team partners with the local fire department and Red Cross to provide fire prevention education.

Conditions treated include, but are not limited to:

  • Chemical burn
  • Electrical burn including lightning
  • Flame/thermal burn
  • Inhalational burn
  • Necrotizing soft tissue infections
  • Scald burn
  • Stevens Johnson Syndrome
  • Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis
  • Traumatic injuries/amputation
