The Nephrology Department offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment for children and adolescents with hypertension; kidney and urinary tract disorders such as nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, congenital malformations, cystic kidneys and kidney failure; urinary tract infections; urine abnormalities such as protein or blood in urine; and fluid, electrolyte and acid-base disorders. All end-stage renal disease services, including all types of dialysis and kidney transplantation, are offered. Modern diagnostic evaluations, including ultrasound-guided kidney biopsies, kidney function studies, as well as radiological, power Doppler ultrasonographic, radioisotope, and MRI are available.
Children’s Hospital is the only Joint Commission-accredited and CMS-approved pediatric dialysis program in the state of Louisiana. Therapies include hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis care to patients with acute and chronic renal failure. The Dialysis Unit also provides acute renal replacement therapies for patients throughout the hospital. Inpatient therapies include hemodialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy and peritoneal dialysis.
The kidney transplant team provides kidney transplantation evaluation, surgery and follow-up care for children with end-stage kidney disease. A comprehensive multidisciplinary approach is provided to patients and their families, including a coordinated post-transplant management of care. Long term follow-up care continues until patients are transitioned to adult services.
Ranked in the top 50 in the nation, the nephrology program at Children’s Hospital New Orleans, staffed by expert providers from both LSU Health New Orleans and Tulane University School of Medicine, offers comprehensive evaluation and treatment for children and adolescents with kidney and urinary tract disorders such as nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, congenital malformations, cystic kidneys and kidney failure; urinary tract infections; urine abnormalities such as protein or blood in urine; and fluid, electrolyte and acid-base disorders. Children’s Hospital provides all end-stage renal disease services, including chronic kidney disease care, all types of dialysis, and kidney transplantation. Children’s Hospital is also proud to serve as Louisiana’s only pediatric dialysis program, performing 6,630 lifesaving dialysis treatments in 2021. Since 1995, the hospital has performed more than 200 kidney transplants.
