Travel Clinic

Protecting Children and Young Adults

The Travel Clinic at Children’s Hospital provides consultation for children and young adults traveling internationally needing prevention (vaccine, medications) or evaluation for potential travel-related illnesses. The Travel Clinic at Children’s Hospital is an official Yellow Fever Vaccine Center. In the event of illness, post-travel consultation is available.

Services include:

  • Pre-travel consultation with a tropical-trained medical provider (video consultations are available on request).
  • Routine vaccine history record review and updated travel-related immunization administration

Vaccine recommendations are needed for travels abroad

Risk of infectious illnesses (and other illnesses) varies according to destination, duration of travel, type of activities, immune status of the traveler, and prior immunizations. Of special concern is travel of young children and travelers visiting family or friends for extended periods and travelers with incomplete immunizations. In addition, some areas may add risk of endemic infections.

Based on recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consideration is given to:

  • Updating routine vaccines (for example hepatitis A, hepatitis B, polio, and others)
  • Special vaccines required for travel (for example, Yellow Fever, Typhoid, meningococcal and others)
  • Advice and prevention of traveler’s diarrhea
  • Advice and prevention on malaria
  • Advice and prevention on other mosquito-transmitted diseases (eg, dengue, chikungunya and others)
  • Advise on safe travel with children
  • Advice on high-altitude illness and other overall safety precautions
  • Consultation on post-return illnesses (eg, fever, diarrhea, rash, and others)

Coverage and Reimbursement

All services require payment at the time of the appointment.

Some insurance carriers may cover travel-related doctor visits and vaccinations, but many do not. A visit to the Travel Clinic will normally include a consultation with a physician, vaccine administration and/or additional required prescriptions for oral medications. Most medications can be filled onsite, but some will be sent to an outside pharmacy. Patients and caregivers are welcome to call the office at 504.896.9820 for a cost estimate prior to the appointment. Upon request, patients will be provided appropriate documentation to file for insurance reimbursement if services provided are listed as a covered benefit.
