Neonatal Hepatology Care

The Neonatal Hepatology Program at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans offers a multi-disciplinary approach to the evaluation and care for newborns who have complex liver disease.

The program relies on the collaboration of different specialties available at Children’s Hospital including, Neonatology, Hepatology, Surgery, Infectious Disease, Medical Genetics and Metabolism, Radiology and Nutrition.

The aim of this program is to coordinate and formalize a collaboration between these specialties with the goal of improving patient care in the evaluation and management for newborns with liver disease.

The program also allows to establish a relationship between providers with the patients and their families that intends to help with an easier transition for outpatient follow up. The program is under the direction of Patricio Arias, MD who serves as the Medical Director of Hepatology and Liver Transplant at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans.

The conditions we evaluate and treat include:

  • Neonatal Cholestasis and Jaundice
  • Hyperbilirubinemia
  • Neonatal Hepatitis
  • Biliary Atresia
  • Metabolic Liver disease
  • Liver Failure
