A psychologist’s perspective: Five things I do each morning to start my day on the right track

In my role as a licensed child psychologist at Children’s Hospital New Orleans, my work revolves around guiding individuals through the intricacies of their inner worlds. However, before I can help my patients, I believe in prioritizing my own well-being and starting each day on a positive note. By incorporating a series of intentional morning rituals into my routine, I create the foundation for a fulfilling day ahead.

Here are five things I do each morning to start my day on the right track:

  • Positive affirmations: The power of positive affirmations should never be underestimated. Each morning, I take a few moments to reaffirm my intentions for the day. By reminding myself that today is going to be a great day and that I am capable of doing my best, I set a positive tone for the hours ahead. These self-affirmations help me cultivate a confident and optimistic mindset.

  • Playtime with my puppy: Spending time with my furry friend is an integral part of my morning routine. My puppy brings me unconditional love and joy, and she helps reduce my stress levels. Engaging in light-hearted play with my puppy before starting my workday allows me to connect with the present moment and serves as a gentle reminder to do things that make me happy.

  • A nourishing breakfast: Breakfast is often referred to as the most important meal of the day. As a psychologist, I understand the profound impact nutrition has on cognitive functioning and overall well-being. I prioritize a healthy breakfast to provide my body and brain with the essential nutrients it needs. By fueling myself properly, I optimize my mental clarity and ensure I have the energy to support others throughout the day.

  • Prepare my water bottle: Staying hydrated is vital for maintaining optimal cognitive function. Before I step out the door, I make it a point to prepare my water bottle for the day. By keeping myself adequately hydrated, I enhance my focus, concentration, and overall mental agility.

  • Creating a to-do list and adding a pop of color or fragrance: To maintain productivity and stay organized, I create a to-do list. This allows me to prioritize tasks, set goals, and stay on track throughout the day. To add an extra touch of positivity, I incorporate a pop of color or fragrance into my outfit. Whether it’s wearing a vibrant accessory or indulging in a pleasant scent, this small gesture appeals to my senses and boosts my mood, setting a positive tone for the day.

I encourage you to explore your own morning rituals and discover what helps you start your day on the right track. Remember, investing in your well-being is the first step towards making a positive impact in the lives of others.
