Plastic surgery

Children’s Hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department specializes in treatment of children, with expertise in pediatric plastic and craniofacial surgery. Our team of five providers comprises the largest, multidisciplinary team of cleft, craniofacial, craniosynostosis and vascular anomaly experts between Houston and Atlanta. Our team provides the most advanced treatments, comprehensively addressing conditions of the skull, facial skeleton and jaw, ears, eyelids, nose, lips, and other parts of the body. Our plastic surgery team is available for consultative guidance and is here to help identify the right provider to care for each patient.

We pride ourselves on our family-focused and child-friendly approach to care.

We offer medical and surgical care for general problems of the Ear, Nose, and Throat. We also offer specialty care for complex issues in a team approach for ear and hearing problems and rehabilitation, Cochlear Implantation, swallowing and voice disorders, speech and language disorders, sleep disordered breathing problems, Safe Tracheotomy Program, Head and Neck Tumors, Vascular Malformations, Comprehensive Cleft Palate Care, Facial Reanimation, Facial Trauma, Skull Base Tumors, Sinusitis, and Endocrine Tumors. With offices in Uptown New Orleans, Metairie, and Covington, Children’s Hospital’s Ophthalmology Department provides comprehensive services for children, including specialty care in general pediatric ophthalmology, glaucoma, oculoplastics, and retinal diseases.

The Ophthalmology Department provides consultation, evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions in infants and children including cataracts, glaucoma, orbital and ocular tumors, ocular plastic surgery, inflammation of the eye and adnexa, strabismus, and amblyopia. Special diagnostic services, such as orthoptic evaluations, ophthalmic echography, electroretinogram, photography and visual field testing are available for both inpatients and outpatients.

Neurosurgery

The Neurosurgery Team at Children’s Hospital is comprised of two pediatric fellowship-trained surgeons and two physician assistants. Our neurosurgeons see patients at every Children’s Hospital satellite clinic, monthly in Covington and Lafayette, and weekly in Baton Rouge and Metairie, as well at Children’s Hospital main campus in the new Neurosciences Clinic. We provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care in conjunction with the Craniofacial and Spina Bifida Clinics, both the largest in the state, and the Brachial Plexus Clinic, the only such clinic of its kind in the state. As part of the Children’s Hospital Level 4 Epilepsy Program, our surgeons perform advanced epilepsy surgery including robotic assisted procedures, the first center to perform this in Louisiana. In conjunction with the Oncology Team at Children’s Hospital, we also house the state’s largest brain tumor registry.

Cardiothoracic surgery

The Heart Center at Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients with congenital cardiovascular disorders, from before they are born, through childhood and into their adult years, supported by dedicated pediatric critical care and anesthesia. Our Heart Center has one of the most experienced cardiothoracic surgical teams in the country. Between our two well-accomplished surgeons, Dr. Frank Pigula and Dr. Timothy Pettitt, the Heart Center has over 50 years of pediatric cardiovascular surgical expertise. The surgical priority for the Heart Center begins with our ability to complete repairs during a baby’s neonatal period. It has been shown that whenever possible, these neonatal repairs not only obviate the role of staged palliate procedures, but are associated with better overall outcomes for children with complex heart problems. Performing early complete repair is a particular passion and
expertise of Dr. Pigula.

Pediatric surgery

In addition to providing acute and emergency services, including both a trauma and burn program, the Children’s Hospital Pediatric General Surgery Team has a robust elective outpatient care team. We provide surgical care for a broad range of conditions including oncology, non-cardiac thoracic, chest wall malformations, inflammatory bowel, gastrointestinal reflux disease, colorectal malformations, Hirschsprung’s disease, advanced hepatobiliary disease, vascular access, feeding access, ostomy/wound care and soft tissue disease. The Pediatric General Surgery Team specialize in minimally invasive techniques including single incision laparoscopy and thoracoscopy. Our providers offer in person visits at Children’s Hospital’s main campus in New Orleans, in New Orleans, Covington, and Metairie. Virtual visits are also provided upon request.

Orthopedics

The Orthopedic Department at Children’s Hospital offers more combined experience than any pediatric orthopedic program between Houston and Birmingham. Our providers work every day to provide the best patient experience possible, including same day appointments, 5 days a week with pediatric orthopedic-trained providers in Baton Rouge, the Northshore, Metairie, and New Orleans. We offer add-on and after hours clinics to provide care to our families whenever they need us, allowing us to expand access to families across the state.

Our providers have specialized training in spine, hip, sports, tumor, hand, neuromuscular, and limb deformity conditions. Our providers consult in our Emergency Department, ensuring that children receive pediatric expertise from the start. As a multidisciplinary team, we work alongside all of our pediatric medical and surgical specialists to ensure that children receive high-quality care. Our team cares for children throughout their pediatric years and into early adulthood.

Urology

Our four fellowship-trained surgeons offer extensive experience in the diagnosis and medical/surgical management of congenital disorders of the urinary tract and genitalia. Our physicians provide the highest level of care by collaborating with other specialists in multidisciplinary clinics for complex genitourinary problems such as Prenatal Anomalies, Spina Bifida, Disorders of Sex Development, and Kidney Stones. Children with urinary incontinence / UTI receive focused treatment through the Healthy Voider clinic. Our providers offer both in-person visits in Children’s Hospital offices throughout South Louisiana / Mississippi as well as a Telemedicine option, to facilitate medical care for children near and far.

Transplant

Children’s Hospital offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary Kidney and Liver Transplant Programs. The kidney transplant team provides kidney transplantation evaluation, surgery and follow-up care for children with end-stage kidney disease. A multidisciplinary approach is provided to patients and their families, including a coordinated post-transplant management of care. Long term follow-up care continues until patients are transitioned to adult services. Our Liver Transplant Program includes the surgical and interventional management of portal hypertension and shunt evaluations. Our team can perform advanced endoscopic procedures due to the growing expertise of our Hepatologists. Children’s is also developing a Liver Center with the primary goal of providing medical and surgical treatment options to children with acute and chronic liver diseases.

Oral surgery

Children’s Hospital New Orleans offers oral and maxillofacial surgical services at our main campus and on the Northshore. We offer family-focused care for newborn patients through young adults. Brett King is Children’s Hospital’s full-time, in-house oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He is board certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Dental Anesthesiology, and has over 15 years of experience in these fields.

Conditions frequently treated by our oral and maxillofacial team include: extractions of teeth, including wisdom teeth (3rd molars), diagnosis and treatment of cysts and lesions of the mouth, jaws and face, orthognathic and jaw reconstructive surgery, management and treatment of temporomandibular (TMJ) disorders, management and treatment of facial trauma and facial bone fractures, surgery for craniofacial and congenital anomalies, and specialized care for patients with special needs and/or complex medical
conditions.

Our oral and maxillofacial team works in close coordination with Children’s Hospital’s pediatric dentistry team and plastic and reconstructive surgery team, providing an interdisciplinary approach to deliver the best outcomes for our patients and their families. We offer a range of inpatient and outpatient procedures at Children’s Hospital’s newly built and renovated clinics and operating rooms.

Dental / orthodontics

The Children’s Hospital Pediatric Dental and Orthodontics Department is unique in that we are able to provide care for all children and coordinate with other specialties in order to minimize anesthesia events. As a board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Suzanne Fournier has received additional training in managing patients with special healthcare needs, behavior management, growth and development, dental trauma, and restorative techniques specific to a pediatric population. Because the dental program at Children’s is hospital-based, we have a streamlined scheduling process that focuses on minimizing wait times for patients. Pediatric Orthodontist, Dr. Leslie Slowikowski, offers specialized orthodontics care, with expertise in cleft, craniofacial and other specialized orthodontics needs. Our dental and orthodontics teams provide a personal touch and individualized approach to care.

Anesthesia

Children’s Hospital Anesthesia Department is the state’s only dedicated pediatric team, with all 11 physicians and 23 CRNAs certified in pediatric anesthesiology. The anesthesia team is a full-time department with an acute and chronic pain management team, a cardiac anesthesia team, and a kidney and liver transplant team. Children’s Hospital is the only Level 2 Trauma Program in the state, and an anesthesiologist is always at the hospital to care for trauma patients or airway emergencies. Our anesthesiologists have unparalleled expertise in rare congenital disorders like mitochondrial myopathy and unusual conditions like pheochromocytomas. The department has airway expertise using state-of-the-art airway video equipment to treat syndromes like Pierre-Robin and Treacher-Collins. The team routinely handles complex, high-risk surgeries like spinal fusions, cranial vault remodeling for craniosynostosis, and neurosurgery for tumors and seizure control.
