Brachial Plexus Clinic

Brachial Plexus Care

The Brachial Plexus Clinic at Children’s Hospital New Orleans offers the evaluation and treatment of brachial plexus injuries and peripheral nerve disorders. Our services are provided by a multidisciplinary team of providers which evaluates infants, children, and adolescents with birth-related injuries, traumatic injuries, and peripheral nerve tumors. Early intervention is crucial to regaining function since brachial plexus injuries can result in permanent impairments if not identified and treated. Patients receive a customized treatment and therapy program to optimize functional recovery. Radiographs, electrodiagnostic studies and MRI are often ordered as part of the evaluation and prognosis is based on the type and severity of the injury. Recommendations may include surgical and non-surgical options.

When to refer

Early referral is crucial in the management of brachial plexus palsy. We recommend placing a referral to the Brachial Plexus Clinic immediately upon diagnosis. Additionally, we recommend immediately placing a referral to both outpatient occupational therapy and physical therapy to begin conservative management and parent education.
