Preparing your child for surgery

Whether you are a child, teenager or adult, surgery can be intimidating. It’s natural for your child to feel a little cared for their operation, but there are several things you can do to help them prepare.

How to help your child prepare for surgery:

  • Answer their questions – You don’t have to go into too much detail, but answering your child’s questions about surgery can help put them at ease. It assures them that you know what’s going on and feel confident that they will be safe. Of course, you deserve to have your questions answered as well, and our staff will be happy to answer your questions too.
  • Explain why surgery is necessary – Children don’t always understand what’s happening to them. It’s important for them to realize that surgery is something they need. This doesn’t mean you need to scare them with the alternative, but just remind them that surgery will make them feel better and stronger in the long run.
  • Meet with your care team – Being handed off to another adult for surgery can be intimidating. Have your child meet with the surgeon ahead of time. Our surgical team works exclusively with kids and can reassure them that we are friendly and are working to help them feel better.
  • Focus on the outcome – Help keep your child focused on how much better they will feel after the operation. Surgery often does involve some discomfort immediately after the operation, so choose your words carefully, but your child know that the procedure should make their life easier.

If you’re having trouble getting your child comfortable with the idea of surgery, please contact our staff. We work with children on a daily basis and can help them and the rest of your family feel more confident.
