Pediatric Neurologists in New Orleans
Evaluation & treatment of neurological disorders
Children typically develop neurological disorders from a genetic disorder, birth defect, or injury. In the case of an inherited disease, symptoms often become noticeable soon after the child is born, but this is not always the case. Regardless of what caused the disease, your child will need skilled care from a specially trained pediatric neurologist.
The Neurology Department provides inpatient and outpatient care for the evaluation, diagnosis, and implementation of therapies for neurologic disorders. The clinic includes a full range of neurodiagnostic services including EEG, EMG and evoked potentials.
Specialty areas include:
- Epilepsy (seizures)
- Neuromuscular disorders
- Developmental delay
- Cerebral palsy (tone/spasticity)
Our neurology department also offers general rehabilitative services. Rehabilitation is a long-term program in which patients work one-on-one with a rehab specialist who devises a customized treatment plan, focused on overcoming the patient’s unique challenges.
What is a neurological disorder?
Many people think a neurological disorder is a disorder of the brain. While all neurological disorders involve the brain, they are actually caused by deformities in the nervous system. An injury to the head or spine can result in a neurologic disorder. They can affect a person’s ability to move, speak, see, hear and think.
Learning your child has a neurological disorder can be difficult, but it does not mean they cannot live a full life. Treatment for children and adolescents with neurologic disorders has come a long way. Though these conditions can rarely be cured, the symptoms can often be managed to improve the patient’s quality of life. Our team works extensively with patients and families to create a personalized plan of care. We can help you find a way to move forward and give your child new opportunities.
