Why sports medicine?
Many people wonder what the difference is between a sports medicine doctor and a regular physician. Both have medical training, both treat injuries, and both and can prescribe medication. The primary difference comes down to training. Sports medicine doctors undergo more focused training on injuries that commonly affect athletes. This helps them diagnose sports-related conditions faster and plan out efficient treatment plans.
Some common injuries treated by sports medicine doctors include:
- Sprained ankles
- Swollen muscles
- Knee injuries
- Head injuries from touch sports
- Cartilage injuries
Consider a physician’s experience. A doctor who treats several car accident victims will start to see patterns in these accidents and learn which questions he or she needs to ask the patient that a less experienced physician might overlook. Likewise, a sports medicine doctor will be more knowledgeable on when a patient will be ready to return to normal activity and what kinds of exercises they can do to avoid future injuries.
Our sports medicine team can help your young athlete get back on track as soon as possible. We treat patients of all skill levels, your child does not need to be an athlete to make an appointment.
