Pediatric Hematology Oncology Care in Louisiana

The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive care with a multidisciplinary team approach. Faculty from LSU Health New Orleans and Tulane University School of Medicine works with a team of specialized professionals including surgeons, pathologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers and others to provide expert, compassionate care for each child and family. The hospital has dedicated areast for inpatient and outpatient care, providing treatment for children with cancer, sickle cell anemia, hemophilia and other blood disorders.

Cancer & blood disorder treatment

The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders treats more than 1,100 children each year. Children’s Hospital treats more Louisiana kids with cancer than all other facilities combined. Though patient care is our primary focus, Children’s Hospital is an active participant in clinical and basic research of childhood cancers and blood disorders. Our physicians have access to the most modern therapies for treatment of malignancies and blood disorders in children.

The Center is also a teaching facility for medical students, nursing students and those completing graduate and postgraduate training. Our program has the only approved, dedicated hematology/oncology fellowship training in Louisiana. This program is part of the LSU Health New Orleans Department of Pediatrics and the Stanley S. Scott Cancer Center of LSU Health New Orleans.

A dedicated team of pediatric hematologists & oncologists

The Center at Children’s Hospital comprises the largest group of hematology and oncology physicians and nurses dedicated exclusively to pediatrics in the Gulf South. They are specially trained to care for the unique needs of children and work alongside a medical staff of more than 200 pediatric specialists, including pathologists, radiologists, oncology surgeons and neurosurgeons. Our pediatric experts realize that caring for children with malignancies and blood disorders commands a delicate balance of medical care and emotional support. Support for patients and their families is provided by child psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers.

Certifications & accreditations

In 1989, Children’s Hospital was approved as a Pediatric Hospital Cancer Program. The program is a part of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) approved LSU Health New Orleans/Children's Hospital Minority NCI Oncology Research Program (NCORP), and is a member of the Children's Oncology Group (COG), a nationwide Children's Cancer Study Group.

The Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant (HSCT) is the only pediatric program recognized by COG as well as the National Marrow Donor program in Louisiana. The HSCT is affiliated with the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and the Pediatric Blood Marrow Transplant Consortium.

Pediatric surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, pathology, radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology and laboratory services are available at the center. Radiation oncologists from Touro Infirmary work closely with physicians at the Center.
