About Dr. Velez

Dr. Maria Velez specializes in Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Children’s Hospital. She attended medical school and completed her residency at the University of Puerto Rico. She then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Velez is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and General Pediatrics. She serves on the faculty at LSU Health New Orleans as a Professor of Pediatrics in Division of Hematology/Oncology and as the Hematology/Oncology Fellowship Director. When asked why she chose to practice Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Dr. Velez said, “It is an honor to be a part of patients’ lives, and taking care of them while providing comfort and healing. I enjoy every moment that I spend taking care of my patients! I also love to teach and educate the next generation of physicians and help them become the best in the field.”

Dr. Velez is fluent in both English and Spanish. Dr. Velez sees patients at the main campus of Children’s Hospital in Uptown New Orleans and at Children’s Hospital Outpatient Center of Baton Rouge.
