Children’s Hospital New Orleans Concussion Clinic
Assessing head injuries for children & adolescents
A concussion is a mild form of brain injury. If your child sustains serious trauma to the head, you should not rule out the possibility of a concussion even if there are not immediately noticeable symptoms. The symptoms of a concussion can be subtle and may not manifest until several hours after the injury occurred. Fortunately, most people fully recover from concussions, but treatment can help manage symptoms and ensure there is no long-term damage.

Symptoms of a concussion in children include:
- Sensitivity to light
- Memory problems
- Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
- Difficulty sleeping
- Strange behavior
Do not panic if you think you notice these symptoms in your child after they bump their head. Remember, kids can be unpredictable, and if you are looking for signs of strange behavior then you will almost definitely find something that may seem off. If you are concerned that your child has a concussion, take them to our Concussion Clinic for an assessment.
The Children’s Hospital Concussion Clinic provides services for children with mild concussions that do not require intensive rehabilitation. We look for potentially overlooked injuries and assess whether the child is at risk for any ongoing problems. Our team can also help your child prepare to go back to school after their head injury. An interdisciplinary team of experienced pediatric brain injury specialists works collaboratively to make sure our patients make a full recovery from their injury.
Our approach involves:
- Diagnosing concussions
- Evaluating for physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms
- Determining when it is safe for athlete patients to return to play
- Discussing accommodations in school, if needed
- Helping families learn how to care for a child with a concussion
- Developing a customized treatment plan and follow-up care service
