Cardiac Intensive Care
Children’s Hospital New Orleans pediatric intensive care
Our state-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is designed to meet the unique needs of children and adults with Congenital Heart Disease, whose levels of care range from basic to highly critical. Located on the first floor of the hospital, the 8,193 square-foot CICU features 20 patient beds, with ten of those beds in private rooms that are outfitted with cutting-edge technology to provide the best available cardiac care in Louisiana and the Gulf South. Each patient bed is designed to allow medical staff complete access to the child, allowing many surgical procedures to occur at the bedside. Our CICU is staffed 24/7 with in-house Children's Hospital attending physician care.
Our staff provides around-the-clock care until patients are able to return home. The CICU team includes:
- Intensive care physicians
- Nurse practitioners
- Multi-specialty technicians
The CICU has nearly 400 admits each year. Patient stays in the CICU can be as short as five days for simple procedures or as long as three months for more complex recoveries. Once a child is diagnosed with Congenital Heart Disease, we offer convenient meetings with our cardiothoracic surgeons and tours of our CICU as well as the Children's Hospital facility.
Parents are encouraged to visit as often as they are able, to foster our dedication to family-centered care. Daily rounds begin at 9 a.m., and we invite parents to join in rounds as they are an integral part of the care team. All visitors must be free of any cold or flu-like symptoms. Three visitors are permitted at each bedside at one time. Visitation is allowed 24 hours a day, except during a sterile procedure. During RSV/Flu season, the minimum age to enter the unit for visiting is 12-years-old.
The CICU Parents' Lounge is located directly across from the CICU. The lounge is available to parents and family members who have children in the CICU. Only parents or primary caregivers may stay in the hospital overnight (9 p.m. to 8 a.m.). Because space is limited, only one sleeper chair may be available per family, and personal belongings must be limited to one small bag/suitcase. If space is available, two people may stay in the lounge.
