Children’s Hospital New Orleans Earns ELSO Gold Level Award for Excellence in Life Support

Children’s Hospital New Orleans is the first children’s hospital in Louisiana or Mississippi to earn the ELSO Gold Level Center of Excellence Award, recognizing excellence in lifesaving ECMO care.

NEW ORLEANS – This month Children’s Hospital New Orleans was awarded the Gold Level ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support from the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization, which is valid for a three-year period. The ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support signifies to patients and families a commitment to exceptional patient care, and demonstrates to the healthcare community an assurance of high quality standards, specialized equipment and supplies, defined patient protocols, and advanced education of all staff members.

“The ELSO Award recognizes and honors ECLS programs that reach the highest level of performance, innovation, satisfaction and quality,” said Tim Pettitt, MD, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Medical Director for the ECMO Program at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. “This award signifies the ongoing commitment of our entire critical care team to deliver the highest quality care to children across the region.”

Additionally, the ELSO Award of Excellence is recognized by US News and World Report and Parents magazine as a criterion for top institutions and distinguished leaders in critical care as it provides evidence of the commitment of the institution to high quality, advanced healthcare.

“Children’s Hospital is honored to be the recipient of such a prestigious award for critical care services and life support equipment and training provided to some of our most vulnerable patients,” said Lindsey Casey, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. “These accomplishments for our ECMO program reflect Children’s continuous dedication to advancing pediatric healthcare for patients across the Gulf South.”

A designated Center of Excellence has demonstrated extraordinary achievement in the following areas: excellence in promoting the mission, activities, and vision of ELSO; excellence in patient care by using the highest quality measures, processes and structures based upon evidence; and excellence in training, education, collaboration, and communication supporting ELSO guidelines that contribute to a healing environment for families, patients and staff.
