Here in Louisiana, we know summer heat all too well. From summer sports to days at the pool, Louisiana’s kids are exposed to hot temperatures and intense sun all summer long. Children’s Hospital has tips to help you protect your child from that blaring Louisiana sun this summer.

Did you know kids produce more heat with activity than adults, and they sweat less? Sweating is one of the ways the body cools itself, in addition to staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids

Children and teens often don't think about resting when having fun. And they may not drink enough fluids when playing, exercising, or taking part in sports.

This summer, teach your kids how to properly take care of themselves while enjoying the outdoors.

Here are some of our tips on how to make sure you child beats the Louisiana summer heat!

  1. Make sure your child dresses in light colored, lightweight, loose-fitting clothing on hot days.
  2. Schedule activity and sports for cooler times of the day. Take rest periods in shady or cool areas.
  3. Drink plenty of fluids, especially on hot days. Drinks of choice include water and sports drinks.
  4. Make sure your child wears a hat and uses a sunscreen.
  5. Spray cool water on your child to help him or her cool off.
  6. Increase time spent outdoors slowly to get your child's body used to the heat.
