Dr. Thomas Scagnelli joins the Children’s Hospital New Orleans Radiology Department after serving as chief of interventional radiology at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System.
NEW ORLEANS – Children’s Hospital New Orleans is proud to announce Dr. Thomas Scagnelli as its first full-time interventional radiologist. Dr. Scagnelli’s expertise combined with the hospital’s new, state-of-the-art imaging center will help advance pediatric healthcare in the region.
Interventional radiology (IR) physicians use images as roadmaps to help access parts of the body that can’t be seen from the outside. These images, which may be generated through ultrasound exams, CAT scans or MRI, help the IR doctor guide tiny instruments through the body to those sites. These procedures are usually performed with needles or miniature catheters or tubes.
Scagnelli will bring interventional procedures to pediatric patients as an alternative to traditional surgery, when appropriate. IR doctors perform a wide variety of minimally invasive procedures, treating conditions that may have previously required open surgery, resulting in fewer risks, less pain, quicker recovery time, and at a much lower cost compared to conventional surgical procedures.
“Dr. Scagnelli is a strong addition to our imaging team,” says Children’s Hospital Chief Medical Officer, George Bisset III, MD. “His many years of experience, ability to work well with children, his amicable personality and his highly specialized skills will offer more options for the care and treatment of Louisiana’s children here at Children’s Hospital.”
Dr. Thomas Scagnelli most recently served as Chief of Interventional Radiology at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System, and serves as adjunct associate professor at Tulane University School of Medicine. He previously served as the Medical Director of Interventional Radiology at University of Miami Hospital and as an associate professor at University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine. He’s also served as Medical Director at The Lennar Foundation Medical Center UHealth as well as The Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn. Scagnelli received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University and completed his residency at The Long Island College Hospital.
“Dr. Scagnelli represents an outstanding addition to Children's Hospital. His world-class ability and experience are matched by his delightful and congenial personality,” says Kenneth Ward, MD, Service Line Chief for Radiology at Children’s Hospital New Orleans. “His expertise extends to training and education of residents and students. We are fortunate to have him establish a first-class interventional program at Children’s Hospital and expect great things in the years ahead."
In April, Children’s Hospital New Orleans’ opened its new 17,500 square foot Imaging Center to support the growth of specialized pediatric imaging and radiology services in an innovative environment designed only for kids, as part of Children’s $300 million campus expansion effort.
The new center includes two new, state-of-the-art GE Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRIs), one 3 Tesla and one 1.5 Tesla, with the strength of the magnet and corresponding image resolution being the difference between the two. Both MRIs are part of an Adventure Series developed in partnership with GE that features custom travel-related themes, taking kids around the world and on outer space adventures as they undergo imaging tests.
“The Imaging Center at Children’s Hospital combines top experts in pediatric radiology with advanced technology to provide precise and safe imaging for our patients, in an environment that is child friendly at every level,” adds Dr. Ward. “We are thrilled to add the specialized skills of Dr. Scagnelli to our pediatric radiology team.”
Dr. Scagnelli has also been active member of multiple professional organizations after serving as the board examiner for the American Board of Radiology for CAQ in VIR and Diagnostic Radiology Oral Board Examination, which is ongoing. He has also been a member of the Maintenance of Certification Advisory Committee to the American Board of Radiology. Dr. Scagnelli has won the service award from the American Board of Radiology for 3 years and was recognized as fellow of the society of interventional radiology.
