Vascular Surgery

Comprehensive Care from Skilled Vascular Surgeons

The vascular surgeons at Children’s Hospital are dedicated to providing excellent surgical care for children with vascular conditions. The vascular surgeons are part of the Department of Surgery at LSU Health New Orleans, and the team provides diagnosis, treatment and postoperative care of a wide range of pediatric vascular conditions including arteriovenous malformations, vascular tumors, deep venous thrombosis (DVT), hemodialysis access, and vascular injuries. Outpatient evaluation of suspected surgical needs and 24-hour emergency evaluation are available to best serve the needs of our patients.

Some of our treatment options include:

  • Sclerotherapy – A noninvasive treatment where a special solution is injected into swollen veins and lymphatic malformations to shrink them.
  • Embolization – In this procedure, blood flow is cut off from a tumor, abnormal growth, or arteriovenous malformation to stop it from growing.
  • Reconstructive Surgeries – Vascular anomalies can be physically disfiguring. Many patients require reconstructive surgery to restore their appearance.
  • Endovenous laser therapy – This is a noninvasive treatment where a laser guided by ultrasound is used to contract and shrink varicose veins and lymphatic malformations.

Preparing for surgery

Our team will help thoroughly prepare you and your child for the operation. We understand that having your child undergo surgery can be a difficult experience. Pediatric vascular surgeries have very high success rates and low risk factors. We can tell you about the specifics of what a procedure involves to help you feel more at ease.

You can help your child prepare for surgery by assuring them it will help them feel better. Remind them that this treatment will help them, and that a friendly team of doctors and nurses will be with them the whole time. We can meet with your child before the day of surgery so that they can feel more comfortable with our team.
