In 2004, CDC ranked Louisiana 5th highest for AIDS case rates (22.4 per 100,000), 11^th highest in the number of new AIDS cases (1,010) among the states. At 7% Louisiana also has the highest mother-to-child HIV transmission rate in the nation (2005).
