OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY
The Occupational Therapy Department provides evaluations and therapies to help children gain indep
endence and promotes the development of fine motor skills, sensory motor skills, visual motor skills, self-help skills and oral motor skills that children need to function and socialize in their home, school, play and community environments. In the case of an injury or debilitating illness, Occupational Therapy will focus on rehabilitating children, allowing them to return to their daily routines at their highest level of
function.

PEDIATRIC OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY means the use of purposeful activity and or play to maximize independence and promote development with children who are limited by physical injury, illness, psychosocial dysfunction, developmental or learning disabilities. Occupational therapists work to develop, improve, sustain or restore the child’s abilities and function.

Occupational therapists assess and work on upper extremity strength and development, fine motor sills, visu
al perception skills, motor planning skills, sensory integration, positioning, splinting, activities of daily living, feeding and oral motor skills, oral aversion and age appropriate developmental skills.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY EVALUATION PROCESS

Treatment is initiated with a doctor’s prescription, community referral, and a therapeutic evaluation. Based on the therapist’s recommendation following the evaluation, paperwork will be submitted to your funding source for authorization. The therapist will submit recommendations for OT services, equipment, home program, etc. to the doctor and funding source. Once the authorization for treatment is received, a standing appointment will be scheduled (e.g. every Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. with a specific therapist).
