The Audrey Hepburn Children at Risk Evaluation (CARE) Center is a comprehensive child abuse center providing state-of-the-art pediatric forensic medicine evaluations in a home-like setting. Beyond providing clinical excellence in child abuse forensic medicine, the CARE Center is active in treatment, consultation, prevention, training, and education.

The medical team at the Audrey Hepburn CARE Center consists of two board certified child abuse pediatricians and one board eligible child abuse pediatrician and a nurse practitioner, all of whom have received extensive training in the evaluation of children for suspected child abuse. The team provides care to more than 1,400 children a year from across Louisiana and southern Mississippi. The medical providers aid in the proper recognition, intervention, protection and prevention of maltreated children, including physical abuse, neglect and sexual abuse. The medical team is also trained in advanced technology and procedures, which are utilized for conducting non-traumatic physical examination, documentation of diagnosed maltreatment and collection of evidence. The CARE Center medical providers assist the investigating agencies in distinguishing abuse from non-abusive physical injuries and allegations.

The department maintains specialized staff for the comprehensive management of child abuse. The CARE Center has published a book, Check Out the Check Up, to assist the medical providers in preparing and reassuring the family and child that the exam is not painful. Resources and extensive information is provided for the child's family. On-site and convenient off-site evidenced based therapeutic services are available for child survivors and their non-offending caregivers. An attorney, with child abuse prosecutorial experience, supervises the management and provides extensive community education, prevention program development, and legislative advocacy. The Audrey Hepburn CARE Center participates in the multidisciplinary process to assure a timely and accurate response to allegations of abuse.

The Audrey Hepburn CARE Center provides information and presentations to parents, the community and media on child abuse and abuse prevention. Quarterly Child Abuse Resource Education (CARE) Sessions are provided for local and visiting professionals. The CARE Center provides monthly opportunities for adults to be a part of the solution to end child sexual abuse by becoming a Steward for Children. The Center has also developed an interactive photo message campaign to change attitudes about harmful discipline practices and increase parental knowledge of effective methods to guide children. The CARE Center hosts an annual awareness event, Trees for Life, which memorializes all the children who died inLouisianadue to abuse, often second to physical discipline, by planting a tree in their honor. Since 2006, 371 trees have been distributed to community heroes and planted in theMetropolitan area. The center also advocates legislation and policies that ensure the protection of children and has successfully changed Louisiana laws to further the prosecution of offenders and protection of children.
