Our state-of-the-art Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is designed to meet the unique needs of our congenital heart disease children and adults whose levels of care range from basic to highly critical. Located on the first floor of the hospital, the 8,193 square-foot CICU features 20 patient beds – 10 in private rooms – that are outfitted with cutting-edge technology to provide the best available cardiac care in Louisiana and the Gulf South. Each patient bed is designed to allow medical staff complete access to the child, allowing many surgical procedures to occur at bedside. Our staff of surgeons, cardiologists, nurse practitioners, nurse coordinators, perfusionists, nurses and multi-specialty technicians provides around-the-clock care until cardiac patients are able to return home.
The CICU has almost 400 admits each year. Patients’ stay in the CICU for as short as five days for simple procedures to as long as three months for more complex recoveries. Once your child is diagnosed with congenital heart disease (and prenatally), we offer convenient meetings with our cardiothoracic surgeons and tours of our CICU as well as the Children's Hospital facility.
Visitors to the CICU must call and speak with their child’s nurse before entering the unit. A phone is provided in the waiting area. Two visitors are permitted at each bedside at a time. Visitation is allowed 24 hours a day except during change of shift: 6:30-7:30a.m. and 6:30-7:30 p.m. We ask that you leave the unit and refrain from calling during these times so that our staff can give a detailed report about your child to the oncoming shift.
Parents are encouraged to visit as often as they are able. Sibling visitation is permitted when pre-arranged with the nurse or doctor. Siblings must be at least 6 years of age to visit in the CICU, except during RSV season, when the age increases to 12 years. Children and adults must avoid visiting if they are ill (i.e. diarrhea, colds, fever, cough). Also, if you have been exposed to or had any infectious diseases such as chicken pox, measles or mumps within the past three weeks, please inform us immediately.
The CICU Parent’s Lounge is located directly across from the CICU. The lounge is available to parents and family members who have children in the CICU. Only parents or primary caregivers may stay in the hospital from 9 p.m. to 8 am. Since space is limited, only one sleeper chair may be available per family, and personal belongings must be limited to one small bag/suitcase. If space is available, two people may stay in the lounge.
