The Autism Center at Children’s Hospital
Mission Statement
The purpose of The Autism Center at Children’s Hospital is to improve the quality of life for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families. In order to accomplish this goal, The Autism Center provides comprehensive, evidence-based assessment and treatment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Although clinical care is the primary mission of The Autism Center at Children’s Hospital, the center also serves as a training facility for providers and engages in innovative research endeavors to promote understanding about Autism Spectrum Disorders and their impact on families.
Clinical Services 
Purpose: To provide evidenced based assessment and treatment to children and their families. Service provision is individually tailored based on each child’s need.
Training
Purpose: To provide training for undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in Psychology. Training efforts also include community outreach and support via consultation with schools and outside agencies, and educational workshops to enhance the knowledge base of professionals working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Research
Purpose: To provide opportunities for research endeavors to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions used in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Research activities occur in order to best inform clinical practice.
Current Services
1. Comprehensive Diagnostic Evaluations - For children and adolescents 2-21 years of age
- Provided by clinical psychologists
2. Medication Management - For children/adolescents with an existing diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (i.e., Autism, Asperger’s Disorder, PDD-NOS)
- Provided by a child psychiatrist
3. Parent/Caregiver Classes - Introduction to ASD: A four-week course for caregivers of children with an ASD covering the basics of diagnosis, treatment, and common challenges. This group is geared for families who have children newly diagnosed with an ASD but all families are welcome.
Behavior Management in ASD: A six-week course for caregivers of children with ASD designed to teach about the principles of learning and behavior, based upon the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis(ABA), and how to apply them in improving the lives of children with ASD. Registration is required to attend this class.
- Special Topics in ASD: One-time sessions in a workshop format focusing on particular challenges faced by families of children with ASD (e.g., toileting, feeding, sleep). Topics will rotate and new topics will be introduced depending on the needs of families.
4. Parent Support Group - For caregivers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders to discuss a variety of topics
- Meets the 1st Tuesday of every month from 6:30-8 PM at the Children’s Hospital Parenting Center at 938 Calhoun St
- Caregivers only – no childcare provided currently
5. Social Skills Groups - Groups for children of different age ranges designed to improve social interaction skills.
